Buffer Stock & Owned Fleet: The Hidden Drivers of On-Time Delivery
Packaging delays can stall entire production lines. We break down why maintaining 200+ tons of inventory and an owned delivery fleet is the most reliable way to guarantee timely supply.
In manufacturing, packaging is rarely the glamorous part of the operation. Yet a shortage of corrugated boxes can halt an entire production line just as effectively as a machine breakdown.
At Swastik Corrugators & Packers, we've built our operating model specifically to eliminate this risk for our clients. Two decisions underpin this reliability:
200+ tons of raw material stock: We maintain a substantial inventory of kraft paper and test liner of various grades at all times. This means we are not dependent on mill lead times for each order. When a client places an order, we can begin production immediately, regardless of external supply conditions.
Owned delivery fleet: Outsourcing delivery to third-party logistics introduces a variable we cannot control. By maintaining our own trucks, we set our own schedules, prioritise our clients' urgent requirements, and are not subject to peak-season freight rate spikes or driver shortages.
Together, these two capabilities allow us to commit to — and consistently deliver — lead times that would be impossible for a plant operating on a just-in-time raw material basis with outsourced logistics.
For procurement managers, the question to ask any packaging supplier is not just "what is your lead time?" but "what is your lead time when your paper supplier is delayed and all trucking is booked?" Our answer is the same either way.
